The Mayol-Sentís family has been linked to Priorat since the settlement charter of the town of Torroja, where two of the first thirty inhabitants were named Sentís i Franquet, two of the surnames of several partners of Mayol Viticultors S.L. and the Viniteca Mayol. In more recent history, up to 46 direct ancestors are listed as being born in Torroja in periods even before 1872, the year in which the civil registry was begun.
The family’s involvement in winegrowing has also been traditional, passed down from generation to generation. Many awards and prizes have been won, such as that of the Universal Exhibition of Barcelona, in 1888, where Ramón Alabart i Cabré, direct family ancestor, won the silver medal and diploma for his wine.
Also in the 20th century Josep Cabré i Sentís, working in the municipal government, was one of the main figures behind the creation of the Torrroja del Priorat Agricultural Union in the 1930’s.
Only the latest generation has combined vinegrowing with other business activities and responsibilities, and is now making a decided return to energetically promote viniculture and devotion to the world of wine.
Currently, the family owns plots in the Torroja city limits with the names of:
