The predominant variety for red Catalan wines. In the rest of the peninsula it is called “mazuelo”. It is properly complemented by garnacha, as it possesses greater acidity and a low oxidative level, characteristics that make it ideal for aging. With its early budding, medium flowering and late ripening period, it is a sturdy variety, resistant to dryness and highly productive. The grapes are large and compact, with a bluish-black color and thick skin. It has high tannin content, which makes its enological aptitude stand out.
