At the foot of Montsant, near the priorship’s farming lands within the La Morera de Montsant city limits are the remains of the Sta Maria de Scala Dei Monastery, spiritual heart and origin of the Priorat.
The Carthusian Monastery was founded in the 12th century. It was the first in the Iberian Peninsula, and was the mother of all Catalan Carthusian monasteries that would follow it.
At this site, the monks taught vinegrowing and winemaking techniques.
Although it is now ruinous, one can still discern what it may have been in its time of splendor.
Modern day visitors can visit a restored cell and the remains of the Carthusian monastery that are being rebuilt. An audiovisual presentation is projected, giving visitors a wealth of information on that time in the Priorat’s history.
