This is a widespread variety, easy to grow and marked by good productivity. It contributes body and fruitiness, which makes it ideal for striking perfect blends. It has a certain tendency toward oxidation. It is a medium- budding, flowering and ripening variety. It shows good resistance to dry periods and adaptation to poor soils. The grapes are medium or large sized, and the skin has medium thickness. It produces a high alcoholic content, weak acidity and medium or low intensity of color. The typical aromas of red fruits in young wines become those of ripe fruit, old wood, cocoa, etc. in crianza. It is also known under the names of “garnatxa país”, “lladoner”, “gironet”, and others. “Garnatxa peluda” is another variety that is a bit more productive than the red variety, and is rarer in Priorat. In recent years, thanks to the new technologies and later harvests, its great quality for crianza and mid-crianza wines is being rediscovered.
