Its special topography, complex orography and marked biodiversity make up a unique, unparalleled landscape. It has become one of the main wildlife reserves of the coastal Mediterranean mountain ranges.
The economic and social development of the area has not threatened the animal and plant life, or relief of the Montsant, as this area is protected by its status as a Natural Park.
The municipalities within the Park are: Morera del Montsant, Cabacés, Ulldemolins, Cornudella de Montsant, la Vilella Alta, Vilella Baixa, la Bisbal de Falset, la Figuera and Margalef, all in Priorat County.
The topography of Montsant offers high peaks and uniquely-shaped monoliths. The erosive action of the water has created many caves and natural springs.
Vegetation is mostly Mediterranean, with marked presence of yew and downy oak groves, although there is a predominance of holm oak stands, Portuguese oaks and pines.
As for wildlife, the Montsant Range is populated by an interesting diversity of species, such as the great spotted woodpecker or the goshawk and birds associated with cliffs, such as the golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle or the peregrine. There are also mammals such as the polecat or wildcat.
The region has a significant archaeological and architectural heritage made up of Paleolithic and Neolithic sites, which give testimony to mankind’s longstanding presence in this territory.
