Olive oil and nuts: the county’s other products

Olive oil / PAO Siurana
Although wine is Priorat’s most emblematic product, vines co-exist with olive tree plantations. The prized extra virgin olive oil is taken from the Protected Appellation of Origin PAO Siurana, Monstant-Priorat district is extracted from the olive oil trees, which are often over 100 years old and mostly of the Arbequina variety.
Other oil-producing Catalan counties in this PAO are Baix Camp, L´Alt Camp, Tarragonès, Ribera d´Ebre and Baix Penedès.
These are olive oils for the most demanding consumers that are balanced, with personality, pleasant on the palate, and a fragrance of green almonds and apples. Depending on the time of harvest, the oil will have fruity overtones (if early) or be sweet, with a golden color (if late). They are made by a meticulous process, and traditional foundations to accompany Catalan and Mediterranean dishes.
The oil of the Siurana PAO stands for 11% of the total oil produced in Catalonia.

Nuts
Priorat also has high quality nuts, although their growing has dropped to secondary importance in Priorat County’s economy in recent years, due to the progress made by wine, but also oil.
Hazelnut and almond plantations have the leading role.
