The great wines of this area maintain a foundation with a predominance of traditional red varieties garnacha and cariñena, often being used in blends with foreign varieties authorized by the QAO regulations such as cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot. Special significance is deserved by the crianza wines aged over a year in oak casks.
As for white wines, a minority in comparison with the reds, the varieties used are garnacha blanca, macabeo, and even rarer, that of Pedro Ximènes.
The centralQAO Priorat vinicultural region is surrounded by the area of the county’s other AO, Montsant.
