The township of Torroja, of some 13.05 km², is in the central part of the county, right in the midst of the Historic Priorat, in the Siurana Basin. The river enters the municipality in east-west direction.
Located at 331 meters of altitude, Torroja is one of the towns that conserves the traditional, authentic and most typical characteristics of the Priorat.
Torroja took its name from the old torre roja, or “red watchtower”, that the Moors built as outlying protection of the Siurana Castle. At the highest point of today’s village, the ruins are still present, though little remains.
Its origins as a village date back to the month of July, 1261. They are mentioned in the settlement charter (carta de poblament) of the neighboring Poboleda in 1270. The site formed part of the Scala Dei Priorship from the outset.
The steep streets, paved with river stones, the large manor houses built in the 19th century along the main street, with such notable examples as Cal Compte, of considerable size, with the remains of a private oratory, and other original spots such as the Font Vella, Bassa and Balandra Streets enthrall visitors.
The parish church, devoted to Saint Michael Archangel is located in the town square. It was built between 1766 and 1767, and consists of three naves in neoclassical style with baroque elements. One of its treasures is an organ built in 1800, built by a local French resident Joan Pere Cavailler. It has recently been restored and included within the Historic Organs of Catalonia concert program.
The Joan Pàmies cellar museum on Balandra Street exhibits agricultural tools and utensils of the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as measuring equipment, glass, ceramics and items used through history by Priorat inhabitants.
The Sindicat Agrícola, or Agricultural Union, is located in the Bassa Street Square. It was founded in 1934 by Torroja’s farmers as a cooperative.
