In Priorat, a distinction can be made between old vines planted along steep slopes and hills, and other more recent ones growing along terraces and in patches.
Old vines: these vineyards mainly consist of the garnacha and cariñena grape varieties, with vines of weak consistency and mostly sparse productions, between 1,000 and 3,000 kg/Ha, giving a more concentrated, high quality fruit.
Many places are hard to farm. This makes it essential to keep up the most traditional vinegrowing methods.
Young vines: in the effort to facilitate farming tasks, the new vine plantations are carried out for the most part on terraces using the trellis systems. It is thus possible to gather the vine shoots with the vine in a T-shape. The production ranges from 3,500 to 6,500 kg/Ha. The varieties of fruit, in addition to the region’s traditional varieties of garnacha and cariñena are cabernet sauvignon, syrah and merlot. Varieties of fruit
